Wicca Term of the Month

Samhain

(Oct. 31st)

Samhain, pronounced "Sow-in" or "Soween" usually celebrated on October 31. It is the Celtic new year and a time when the veil between the physical and spiritual world are thin. It is a time to commune with ancestors and loved ones that have passed over. We never summon or call back the dead, we just let them know that if they wish to speak to us we are more than willing to listen. Samhain opens the dark half of the year, it is the first day of winter. A time for the Goddess Morrigan and her consort the God The Dagda. It is also a time for honoring the crone Goddess Hekate. Honey is good to offer to Her, we offer her honey along with our cresent cakes that we make at almost every Sabbat. In some regions Herne the Hunter begins his Wild Hunt on Samhain. The "dumb supper" is held on this night, the dumb supper is a dinner set out for the spirits. During which no one is to speak so as to give respect and honor to those who have passed on.This practice is still followed in parts of the Celtic world.

Lore -
It is traditional on Samhain night to leave a plate of food outside the home for the souls of the dead. This is the night when the veil between both worlds is at its thinnest. A candle place in the window guides them to the lands of eternal summer and burying apples in the hard-packed Earth, "feeds" the passed ones on their journey.

Wisdom of the Crone, Death of God, Reflection on our place in the Wheel of the Year. Honor the dead, end of summer, the New Year, and celebrating reincarnation.

Colors -
Black, Orange and Red.

Symbols-Jack-O-Lantern, Balefire, Besom, Masks, The Cauldron and Waning Moon.

Craft of The Month

5 Different Craft to do with your Kids for Samhain!

1.Make ghosts out of tissues. Have the children ball one up, then wrap another tissue over top the balled-up one. To form the head and the ghost body, either tie a string at the "neck" or put clear tape around it. Have the children use markers to make a face.

2.Have the children draw a Jack-O-Lantern on orange construction paper. Cut out eyes, nose, and mouth. Tape yellow plastic wrap to the back of the Jack-O-Lantern.

3.Make a brown paper bag Jack-O-Lantern. Fill a brown paper lunch bag with newspaper. Twist shut, and tape to form the stem. Paint orange. Glue on construction paper or paint on facial features.

4.Sponge print jack-o-lanterns, cats, cauldrons, bats...or any other Samhain shape by cutting a cheap sponge in that shape and having the children dip them in the paint and print them on paper.

5.Make toilet paper roll bats. Paint a toilet paper roll black, or cover with black construction paper. Staple one end shut. Glue on bat wings. Glue on two googly eyes.

Applesauce
2 apples for each person
a little water ( about 1/2 cup for every 8 apples)
a little cinnamon ( about 1 teaspoon for every 8 apples)
sugar (1/2 to 1 cup for every 8 apples)

Wash, peel, core, and cut up apples. Boil until soft. Let cool for 10 minutes. Blend into sauce.

Pumpkin and Maple Sugar Pie

16 oz. pumpkin, canned
1 cup milk

2 tablespoons real maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 eggs

one 9 inch pie crust, unbaked
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
whipped cream (optional)
1 Tablespoon butter

In a mixing bowl, combine all ingredients except the last two. Pour into the pie shell. Bake in preheated 450 degree oven for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees, and continue baking for about 45 minutes more, or until knife inserted near center comes out clean. Cool to room temperature, refrigerate. Garnish with whipped cream if desired.

Blessed Be! Finally, It’s one of my favorite times of year! The leaves are changing colors, and falling to the ground. The air smells of apples and maple leaves. As you walk the street the sound of crunching under your feet. Yup! It that time once again to get ready for Samhain/Halloween. A time to spook and trick or treat. To enjoy the new year and remember the dead. The whole Newsletter will aid in whatever your heart’s desire.

In Love and Light,

Phoenix Ravenmoon

Craft of the Month

How to Dry Herbs

Growing herbs is just half of the fun. Cooking with them and tasting the fruits

of your labor is the best part! Here are some simple ways to preserve your homegrown herbs.

Drying Long-Stemmed Leafy Herbs

Step1: Harvest herbs in the early morning hours just after the dew has dried off the leaves.

Step2: Remove dirt by gently rinsing cut stems in cool water.

Step3: Shake off excess water.

Step4: Gently pick off and remove dead or discolored leaves with your fingers.

Step5:Gather stems into small bunches and tie cut ends together with string or rubber bands.

Step6: Hang bunches upside down in a warm, dark, dust-free, well-ventilated area such as an attic or over the water heater.

Step7:Take down bunches in two to three weeks - when herbs are dry and brittle.

Step8:Strip leaves from stems.

Step9:Store dried leaves in small jars, plastic bags or clean film containers.

Drying Short-Stemmed Herbs and Flower Petals

Step1:Choose an area that has good air circulation and does not receive direct sunlight.

Step2:Place a clean window screen on top of bricks or blocks.

Step3:Strip fresh leaves from stems and lay them on screen in one layer. For smaller leaves, place intact stems and leaves directly onto the screen.

Step4:Turn leaves periodically to ensure that the entire surface of the leaf is exposed to the air and dries completely.

Step5:Remove in 7 to 10 days - when leaves are dry.

Step6:Store for later use in plastic bags, small jars or clean plastic film containers.

Wicca Term of the Month

August 1st was the first harvest holiday Lammas/Lughnasadh. It was also a new moon which was pretty kool :).

Lammas/Lughnasadh

Lughnasadh, pronounced "Loo-nus-oo" is the Celtic festival of Lugh. Lughnasadh means the commemoration of Lugh who is a fire and light God. He is also a God that undergoes death and rebirth in a sacrificial mating theme with the Goddess. During this time, the Hlly King is the God that undergoes the death and rebirth. During this time, again make the corn dollies to represent the "dying" God and keep it until the following year when you burn it and make a new doll. Lughnasadh is the first harvest, Autumnal Equinox is the second and Samhain the final and third harvest. Grain and corn are predominate at this time because they symbolize the fertility and abundance of the Earth. The God is beginning to wane during this time and the Goddess is changing into Her crone aspect.

Lore -
This is the time to plant seeds from the fruit consumed in ritual. If they sprout, grown the plant with love and as a symbol of your connection with the God and Goddess.

Wheat weaving (make corn dollies and etc), is an appropriate activity for Lughnasadh. Visit the fields, orchards, lakes and well.

Honor the Parient deities, Honor the Sun Gods, Celebrating first harvest.

Colors -
Red, Gold, Yellow, Green, Orange & Citrine.

Symbols -
Corn, All Grains, Bread, Full Moon, Wheat.

Deities -
Sun Gods, Mother Goddesses.

Stones -
Yellow Diamond, Peridot & Citrine.

Ritual Oils -
Eucalyptus, Corn and Safflower.

Food -
The foods of Lughnasadh include bread, blackberries and all berries. Acorns, crabapples, all grains and locally ripeproduce. A cake is sometimes baked and cider is used in place of wine.

Craft of the Month

Learn how to make a corn husk doll

Corn husk dolls were first made by Native American children. Learn how to make a corn husk doll.

Corn husk
dolls have been around for centuries. Early arrivals to the United States admired the beautiful, simplistic dolls that Native American children made from corn and fashioned to resemble members of their tribe. Some of the first Americans were taught how to construct these tiny, colorful playmates at the first ever Thanksgiving dinner. Since then, thousands use corn husk dolls for decoration and play. They're a perfect craft and activity for children of all ages, and make for unique and lively decorations.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

9-12 pieces of green corn husk

String or twine

Decorative pieces

Scissors

Bowl of water

Glue

A WORD ABOUT CORN HUSK The corn husk you use to construct your doll should be green and not dried. Green corn husk can be purchased from any craft store. You can also use green corn husk you peel from a corn cob yourself. If you must use dried husks, before beginning the construction phase, soak all corn husks in a large bowl of warm water to make them more pliable. Corn husks which are purchased or fresh can be treated in this manner also, though it isn't usually necessary. INSTRUCTIONS

1. Take a small handful of husks and bunch them together so that they are of equal length. Once this is done, use twine or string to hold them together. Approximately 1/2 inch from the top of your husks, wrap two layers of twine and knot tightly. This will serve as the body for your doll. Once you've completed this step, set aside.

2. Take 1 or 2 small pieces of husks and roll them together to form a ball. (If husks are too dry or stiff, soak them for about 30-minutes in a large bowl of warm water.) This "ball" will serve as your doll's head, so you can play with its size until you are satisfied you've created the look you want.

3. Once you have the right size for your head, take a single piece of husk and drape it over your head, gathering the two loose ends at the base of the head. Pull the single piece of husk tightly around your ball (so that you can draw or design a face on it later), and twist the loose ends once and tie tightly with a single piece of twine. Set aside.

4. It's time to make arms. Grab your first group of husks (which you've already tied together on one end in step 1). From the loose end, gather one husk and pull upward (as if peeling a
banana). Cut two small pieces of twine. Use one piece of twine to tie the arm off near the center stalk of husks. (This will help to keep it separated from the body of your doll.) Use the other piece of twine or string to tie the loose end of the husk, forming a wrist for your doll. Repeat on the other side so that you have two distinct arms on your doll. If the arms appear too long or disproportionate, cut the husk to the proper size or find a husk more to your liking.

5. Take your dolls head and position it on top of the body so that your two loose pieces of twine drape themselves over the neck of the doll. Using a small piece of string or twine, attach the head to the body. (If the head does not seem to want to stay in place, you may dribble a small amount of glue on the underside of the head before securing it with twine to the body or add a pipe cleaner to it. Allow glue to dry completely before proceeding.)

6. Take a small piece of twine and tie a waist on your doll. It will be located near the center of your stalk of husks. Tightly knot the string or twine.

7. To make the legs for your doll, split the husks which have not yet been tied off, in half. (Right below the waistline you've just made.) Use several small pieces of twine to tie off the legs on each side. Make one knot just below where the legs separate and a second knot near the foot of your doll. Repeat on the other side until you have formed two distinct legs.

DECORATING AND DRESSING

Your new corn husk doll can be decorated to your liking. Small children will be able to decorate with colored
construction paper, crayons and markers. You can attach paper clothing, jewelry, facial features and other items with a small dot of household glue. Older children and adults can make clothing from fabric, additional pieces of corn husk or many other items. Facial features, such as eyes, ears, noses, and mouths can be drawn on with permanent markers or crayons. Craft eyes, yarn mouths, and more can also be attached to your doll with glue.

TIPS, TRICKS, AND HINTS

MAKE A SKIRT for your corn husk doll out of a fresh piece of husk. Simply wrap around the waistline and tie off with a piece of twine or colored yarn. You can decorate your skirt beforehand with markers or
crayons.

COLORED yarn can be bent in the shape of a smile or ears and glued into place for instant facial features.

CORN HUSKS can be soaked in food coloring to make colored clothing or skin. Soak husks for 30-minutes in a large bowl containing warm water and several drops of your desired color. To make vibrant browns, soak husks in a large bowl of coffee or tea. DIP the feet of your doll into a small bowl of

acrylic paint to make brown or black shoes. Allow to air dry and repeat, if necessary.

USE small doll clothes to decorate your corn husk doll. SEQUINS, buttons, glitter and other

craft supplies can be glued to your corn husk doll to make jewelry, eyes, colored clothing and more.

INSERT a pipe cleaner into the back of your doll to put them on display, help them bend into a variety of positions, or hang them.

MAKE instant hair for your doll with corn silk, yarn, or twine. Attach with glue.

WATERCOLOR paints will soak into corn husks, and give a deep, rich color to your doll.

USE a plastic bottle cap for a doll hat.

YOU can make a perfectly round head for your doll by placing a few cotton balls inside a piece of husk, instead of rolling husks. Decorate first, and then attach to the body using the above instructions.

Wicca Term of the Month

Smudging

Using a smudging tool is part of many

Native American traditions

. The burning of herbs for emotional, psychic, and spiritual purification is also common practice among many religious, healing, and spiritual groups. The ritual of smudging can be defined as "spiritual house cleaning." In theory, the smoke attaches itself to negative energy and as the smoke clears it takes the negative energy with it, releasing it into another space where it will be regenerated into positive energy. Can also be used to cleanse your tool and even your own body to rid most object of negative energies.

Craft of the Month

Make and use your own Smudging stick

Smudge sticks come in all sorts of different herbs and combinations of herbs. The most commonly used herb in smudging in Sage, or White Sage. There are also combinations of sage with other herbs, like lavender, juniper, sweetgrass, cedar and pine, just to name a few.

All a smudge stick really is, is a tightly bound group of dried herbs that can be lit, then blown out so it glows and smokes. Then the smoke can be feathered or guided over whatever area, item or person needs to be smudged or cleansed.

To make your own, simply grow your own, or buy fresh herbs from the grocery or nursery. If you grow your own, or pick them from a growing plant, do not take so much that it kills the plant. Take leaves from the ends of the plant, asking the plants permission before. Be sure to thank the plant for it's offering of herb, and if you like, you can leave an offering in return. The indians used to leave tobacco in respect of the plant. But I find shiny copper pennies do well also. Then hang them in bundles in a cool dry place for them to dry naturally. Then when they are good and dried, group them in large bundles, sometimes called "wands" and wrap them with cotton thread to keep them together. That's it! You have a smudge stick. Your sticks may look crude at first, but with more practice and stickmaking, you will grow to make fine smudgesticks for your own smudging needs.

To smudge a space for cleansing or clearing, fallow these steps:

1. Ground and center yourself. Take a few deep cleansing breaths and thank The Devine Power for it's blessings.

2. Hold your smudge stick in your reciving hand (usually left) and light the end. Allow it to burn slightly and blow it out so that it's glowing and smoking.

3. Next take a feather, or fan, or even your hand and begin to direct the smoke in the direction of the area you want to smudge. If your smudging a whole house for a moving in ceremony, then take small circles starting in the center of each room and slowly begin to move into bigger circles and don't forget the corners. Stagnant energy loves to collect in corners.

4. If this smudging is indeed for a moving in ceremony, then remember to open cupboards and closets as they collect energy as well.

5. When you feel your space is sufficiently smudged, stamp out your smudge stick, or sprinkle water on it to put out the glowing embers. Then be sure to place it in a heat safe place, like the kitchen sink. Herbs can still be a fire hazard even if it looks like it's all been stamped out.

6. Thank The Divine energy in this space for it's cleansing and visualise white light surrounding your space, sealing in the fresh, clean energy. You might even want to place a cleansed clear quartz crystal in the center spot in your home to retain the intentions of the clearning.

Herbs
Smudging with different herbs can bring different results. Here are a few suggestions on herb combinations and what they are used for.

Sage-- Cleansing, Strength, wisdom, mental clarity. Good for clearing negative energy from a space.

Cedar-- Draws positive energy to a space and aids in healing.

Sage & Lavender--Peace, wisdom & cleansing. Lavender is often used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation and peacefulness.
Sage, Juniper & Sweetgrass--Cleansing, purification & bringing in sweetness to an area.

Sage & Pine--Cleansing and purification.

Try wrapping your different combinations of herb sticks in differnt colored thread so you can tell which is which.

Happy smudging!

Craft of the Month

Plant  a  Butterfly  Garden

Attracting  beautiful  butterflies  to  your  play  environment  will  not  only  provide  a  home  to  delicate  species,  but  children  (and  adults!)  love  to  watch  butterflies.

How  does  this  project  enhance  the  play space?

Creating  a  play space  often  involves  incorporating  educational  or  learning  opportunities  for  a  child  in  the  area.  A  butterfly  garden  is  a  fantastic  way  of  encouraging  exploration,  offering  new  sensory  experiences  and  can  even  be  a  science  lesson  in  waiting.

Materials:

Flowers  and  plants  (choose  carefully!)

Hand  trowels

Rocks

Water  dish

Instructions:

1. First,  evaluate  the  potential  of  the  play  environment.  Is  there  a  garden  which  you  can  use?  Do  you  have  the  resources  to  plant  a  garden,  or  should  you  aim  to  plant  a  few  well-chosen  plants?  Butterflies  need  lots  of  sunlight  - so  make  sure  you  can  plant  in  a  sunny  area.  Adding  a  rock  or  bricks  will  encourage  butterflies  to  sun  themselves!

2. Butterflies  also  need  water,  so  plan  to  provide  a  water  source,  if  one  is  unavailable.  A  small  water  dish  will  suffice,  or  you  can  choose  to  create  a  depression  in  sand  or  gravel  to  retain  water.

3. Butterflies  are  so  delicate  that  they  can  be  torn  apart  by  wind,  so  look  for  an  area  that  provides  a  break  from  wind.  A  fence,  wall,  or  hedge  will  serve  as  adequate  wind  protection.

4. Choose  the  right  plants!  Research  has  shown  that  butterflies  seem  to  prefer  yellow,  purple,  white,  and  light  pink  flowers.  Also,  try  to  choose  plants  with  broad,  flat  blooms  that  make  it  easier  for  butterflies  to  land  and  feed.

5. Ask  your  Home  Depot  Garden  department  associates  if  they  have  any  plants  that  they  recommend  for  butterflies  in  your  area.  In  general,  good  choices  include  aster,  beard  tongue,  heliotrope,  daylily,  iris,  lavender,  milkweed,  petunia,  phlox,  red  clover,  thyme  and  zinnia.

6. Caterpillars  should  be  included  in  your  plans,  to  encourage  butterflies  throughout  their  life  cycle.  Leafy  plants  that  provide  shelter  and  can  nourish  a  caterpillar  are  ideal.  Some  options  are:  aster,  beard  tongue,  and  heliotrope.  Warning:  caterpillars  will  feed  off  of  these  plants,  so  expect  to  see  chewed  up  leaves!

Play Dough Recipe

I used to make a batch of this play-dough once a month in the classroom. Changing the colors for the season. Although 20 little hands stayed busy shaping and molding, the play dough never dried out!
You'll need:
Flour 3cups
Salt 1 1/2 cups
Water 3 cups
Vegetable Oil 2TB.Cream of tartar 1TB.
Food coloring few drops or unsweetened "Kool-Aid" 1pkg.

Mix ALL of the ingredients in a large saucepan.
Cook over medium low heat, until the dough comes away
from the edges of the pan and it becomes difficult to move the spoon. Remove from heat. Cool until it can be handled.
Place on counter or wax paper knead 3-4 times.
Store in an air tight container.

Wicca Term of The Month

Beltane!

(April 30th-May 1st)

Beltaine means "bel-Fire", derived from the Celtic God Bel, which means Lord. Beltaine and Samhain are the two greatest festivals, the beginning of Summer and the beginning of Winter. Beltaine is the time when the Goddess and the God marry - a time when the Goddess changes from the maiden aspect to the mother aspect. Since fertility was a major part of this time of year, buring Beltaine, the maypole was constructed. The maypole is a large pole with a crown of flower and colored ribbons on the top. The pole is the male phallic symbol and the crown is female. Another feature of Beltaine festival is jumping over the fire. Beltaine is the Oak King sacrificial mating and resurection. He mates with the Goddess at this time & then at Midsummer is "overrulled" by his twin brother the Holly King.

Lore -
Weaving and plaiting are traditional arts at this time of the year. This represents the joining together of two substances to form a third, this is the spirit of Beltane. This is the union of the God and Goddess, the Sacred Marriage, all new life, fertility for all living things and the end of winter.

Colors - Red, Green, White, Dark Yellow

Symbols -
Eggs, Flowers, Chalice, May Pole, Butterchurn, Flower Chaplet, & May Baskets.

Deities -
Marriage or sexual union of Deities, All Mother Goddesses.

Stones -
Sapphire & Bloodstone

Ritual Oils -
Passion Flower, Rose, Tuber Rose & Vanilla

Food -
Foods traditionally come from the dairy and dishes such as marigold custard and vanilla ice cream are fine.

Wicca of the Month

Inbolc

(Feb 2nd)

(Greater Sabbat/Cross Quarter)

Imbolc is also known as Candlemas, St. Brigits Day, Brides Day, or Groundhogs Day. The word Imboc means "in the belly". It is the celebration of the return of the maiden of spring. During this time we see the first stirrings of life and spring. The Celtic Goddess Brigit/Brigid, pronounced "Breed", is honored on this day. She is the triple muse Goddess who brings fertility of the upcoming spring. She is also a fire Goddess who rules over healing, inspiration, poetry and smithcraft. One tradition is to make Brigit a bed. This entails making a corn dolly to represent the Goddess in her maiden form and making a phallic wand and placing them side by side in a basket. The corn dolly is called a biddy. Another tradition is that a Priestess should wear a crown of 13 candles. Some do this to represent the young maiden bringing forth the light of spring and some traditions use this to represent the Mother, because it is the Mother Earth who is quickened at Imbolc.

Lore -
It is traditional upon Imbolc, at sunset or just after ritual, tolight every lamp in the house, even if only for a few moments. Or you can light candles in each room. This is to honor the Sun's rebirth. If snow lies on the ground outside, walk in it for a moment and recall the warmth of summer. With your projective hand, trace an image of the sun on the snow.

Colors -
White, Yellow & Pink

Symbols -
Candles, The Bride, Burrowing Animals, Grain Dolly& Sun Wheels.

Deities -
God and Goddess as children, All Virgin Goddess'

Stones - Turquoise & Amethyst

Ritual Oils -
Jasmine, Apricot, Carnation, Sweet Pea, Neroli & Olive

Food -
Foods appropriate to eat on this day include those from the dairy, since Imbolc marks the festival of calving. Spicy and full bodied foods in honor of the sun are equally attuned. Also peppers, onions, leeks, shallots, garlic and chives are appropriate. Spiced wines and dishs containing raisins, any food symbolic of the sun are traditional.

Notes: First planting of spring. Ritual fires are burned. A time for birth, healing and inspiration. This is a popular time for vows of dedication or consecration.

Craft of the Month

Craft ideas for kids of Imbolc

*Make a toilet paper roll candle. Have your child paint or cover a toilet paper roll in construction paper. Have them cut a large flame from orange, then a smaller one from yellow, and and even smaller one from red. Layer them, and glue together. Staple, tape or glue the "flame" to the toilet paper roll.

*There are many candle making kits for sale at craft stores. Keep in mind the age of your child, and select an appropriate kit to make candles. I love the beeswax candles.

* Plant seeds with your child. Seed starter mixture is the best to use. Peat pots can be plated directly into the ground.

*Make jeweled candle holders. First make the clay: Put 2 cups of salt and 2/3 cup water in a saucepan. Heat and stir for 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat and add 1 cup of cornstarch and 1/2 cup water. Mix thoroughly. Het more if it needs to be thickened. This recipe takes a strong stirring arm. Let cool a bit, then store in airtight container until you're ready to use. Second: shape into a candle holder. Put the candle in to make the hole, then take out to dry. I found "jewels" in the local discount store's crafts section. Put those on the candle holder. Let dry. You may have to glue the jewels back on after the clay is dry. This can also be painted and covered in shellac if you wish.

*Banana Candles
1 banana for every two "candles," 1 pineapple ring for each "candle," 1 cherry for each "candle," 1 toothpick for each "candle," Peel the banana. Cut the banana in half. Put a pineapple ring on a plate. Put one end of the banana into the middle of the pineapple ring. Stick the cherry on the top of the banana to look like a flame with the toothpick. Make sure people know there's a toothpick in this when you serve it.

It recycles and makes gardening easy. If you use the natural carton, you can just plant then under the earth right with the carton.
